BW Ideol secures strategic partnership to scale up concrete floating wind foundations
Holcim has taken a minority ownership in BW Ideol, a key part of BW Offshore’s energy transition portfolio, to support the industrial scale-up of concrete floating foundations for offshore wind.
The investment is accompanied by a strategic partnership for the supply of construction material to two dedicated fabrication lines for concrete floating wind foundations, planned in Southern France and Northeast Scotland. The collaboration is underpinned by Holcim’s experience from large-scale wind projects, including the delivery of concrete foundations to both onshore and offshore developments in Europe.
BW Ideol has more than 15 years’ experience in the design, engineering and delivery of floating offshore wind foundations. The company holds equity interests in floating wind projects off the coasts of Scotland and Southern France and is developing a strong pipeline of large-scale projects in the North Sea and Mediterranean towards 2030–2040.
Scaling the use of concrete for floating offshore wind infrastructure marks an important step in the maturation of the sector. Industrialised fabrication is expected to support cost competitiveness and scalability, while also generating skilled jobs and long-term economic benefits for coastal regions.
BW Ideol leverages BW Offshore’s long-standing experience in the development, ownership and operation of offshore energy production systems. The collaboration supports BW Offshore’s ambition to develop new business opportunities within the energy transition by applying proven offshore capabilities to adjacent low-carbon and renewable segments.
